WHEN THEY MET

Andy and I are chronic prepare-ers, at least in the realm of our kids (whoa plural). And this tendency of ours, whether good or bad (verdict is still out), went into full swing when we started discussions about how best to prepare Marin for her baby sister. Through out my pregnancy she has shown warm feelings about the baby, always touching or kissing my belly and praying for "baby bite" at prayer time, but we weren't exactly sure how it would play out when Brite arrived. After all, there is only so much preparing you can do for these little ones. The rest is in their hands.

We had planned for Daddy and Marin to come to the hospital to pick up mom and baby. We wanted to leave as a family and arrive home as a family, all for one and one for all.
They knocked on the door to my hospital room, Marin with her look of apprehension peeking through the door frame. I tried my best to hide that my eyes were filling with tears. She looked so grown up all of a sudden. She looked like I had been away for months. I missed her. And nothing makes you see how big your baby has gotten than holding a new one in your arms. I could write for days on this, but I'll spare you some of the tales from the hormone diaries.

I had Brite positioned on the bed where she would be eye level for big sister. And after hugs, cuddling and a small tour of my tiny hospital bathroom to appease some crazy toddler fascination, I walked Marin over to the bed and told her we had someone very special for her to meet. I couldn’t help but hope I was witnessing two best friends meeting for the first time. Time would tell.
And there it was. The biggest grin, a small squeal of some kind and a "Baby Bite!"

She had done it again...amazed us with her lovely little heart. We asked her if she wanted to hold her baby sister and she responded with a high pitched "uh huh!" She wiggled her way into the hospital rocking chair, adjusted her legs, and stretched out her arms. She looked as ready and prepared as she did a couple weeks prior with that birthday candle.  It was like someone had taught her these small skills that we had overlooked or she had simply figured it out on her own. She was ready to hold baby sister. We layed Brite in her arms and Marin looked up at us with a huge smile and finger pointing at little sister "look, baby Bite!"

We signed discharge papers and were wheeled down the hospital hallways while Brite screamed and Marin cried with concern for baby sister. Andy and I looked at each other and the beautiful little circus of ours that was drawing all sorts of attention. What an amazing moment of total blissful exhaustion and anticipation. We snapped two in car seats, just before the nurse asked if we wanted to squeeze in the back with them. "Nope, they'll be alright."
Both girls were asleep before we hit the highway. And the car was peaceful...

...Until Brite started screaming and we pulled over for Andy to jump in the back, squeezed to a pulp by sandwiching car seats.

 Let the adventure begin.

38.5 weeks

I had forgotton how slow the last couple weeks of pregnancy can be, every cramp being carefully analyzed.  It’s such a tortoise and the hare ending to a pregnancy that was getting the reputation for being so speedy.

This pregnancy gets compared a lot to my pregnancy with Marin…which how could it not?  The two little beans share the same due date. Morning sickness wreaked havoc in the same ways and for the same duration. I’ve gained the same amount of weight with each pregnancy (32 lbs and holding!). I have craved all the same foods (powdered donuts, bagels, cereal, strawberry sour strips).  The two journeys share so many commonalities. It blows my mind that these two sisters could even share the same birthday.

And then of course there are the differences.  I have worried less this time around. I have prepared less, and formed fewer expectations for a series of events that are totally out of my hands. This baby girl moves constanstly (nervous giggle) while Marin made her presence known at more predictable times like after coffee or when I threw the blanket off in the morning. In the last weeks of carrying Marin, Andy and I clung to our final days as a couple.  And this time around, we are puddles of parent mush over the fact that our time as just the three amigos is coming to a close.  I know in my head we are about to multiply the love in our home, but I can’t help but think, on the eve of my first’s second birthday, just how bittersweet this transition feels in my heart right now.

I think we’re ready though.  I think the three amigos are ready for this adventure.

And while we wait, we are cuddling longer at bedtime, jumping in all the puddles we can find, eating extra sweets after dinner, and talking a ton about the best friend God is making for a little lady who will be two years old tomorrow.

Marin's 2nd Birthday Party

When Marin turned one, we were in the middle of moving and life was super hectic (but isn't it always), so we just shared a sweet cake moment with the three amigos and looked forward to "next year" when we could throw her a fun party with friends and family.  Well, life is still hectic and there is a baby due in a couple weeks, but we had our minds set on seeing this sweetheart celebrated.  And that she was.  My heart could burst remembering that smile on her face while Happy Birthday was sung over her.  Then how she waited til the very last word of the song to give that candle a big puff. How in the world did she know how to do that?! Every person in the room made it a special day for our girl and I am grateful for the love and support of our little village.

Happy (early) Birthday, to our beautiful little Marin.

A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

10:00 PM Tuck Marin into her crib.
10:30 PM  From our spot on the couch, Marin's chattering all of a sudden sounds louder. A tiny, slightly terrified, but mostly proud, toddler comes running down the hall to two stunned parents. We laughed so hard, we frightened the poor girl. She had done it. She had climbed out of her crib and this was her Rocky victory dance.
11:30 PM Still awake and trying to climb out of crib. Except now she moves like spider man and scales the crib in two seconds. flat. Punish? Don't punish? Coax? Sing? Lay by the bed? Re-arrange the entire room and set up toddler bed? Don't think so. I wasn't quite ready for this. Tomorrow. Tonight, we sleep...or so we hope.
11:30-12:00 AM Andy and I take turns coaxing Marin to lay down.
12:00 AM Spider man must do what spider man was made to do.
12:01 AM Decide to bring spider man Marin into our bed.
12:01 AM Convince Andy the couch is a better spot for him to sleep (you know because work tomorrow and all)
12:05 AM Rub Marin’s back
12:15 AM Hear heavy breathing. Victory is mine! Now, how to get up and pee? Hmmm.
12:20 AM Stuff my runny nose with tissue so I don't sniffle all night
1:00 AM Toss and turn oh. so. slowly.
5:00 AM Wake up to Marin wiping her runny nose on my cheek
5:01 AM "Mommy! Wow!"
5:02 AM Try not to think about peeing again. Pretend I am asleep.
5:15-6:40 AM "Marin, lay down. Mommy will scratch your back." Sing a song. Sing another song. Feel baby sister moving inside. Avoid big sister kicks and turns on the outside. "I love you Miss Marin. Lay down. It's not time to get up yet."
6:45 AM Chubby, soft Marin arm wraps around my neck. Sigh.
7:00 AM Heavy breathing.
8:00 AM Alarm. Smile and wake the sweet girl next to me.

and for today's trick...toddler bed.

BANO, COMMODE, BATHROOM

In true nesting fashion, I hearby present to you a small but finished room in our home: el bano, the commode, the bathroom.  I always love seeing home tours out in blog world, so here is a humble look at a small but mighty room in our home.
